Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, particularly seniors. Dr. Randy and the team at Houska Dental are here to help you get the care you need to restore your oral health. Contact us now to schedule an appointment.
Gum disease must be treated with a combination of specialized in-office care and good at-home oral hygiene. Along with appointments at our office, you will need to brush and floss properly, use prescription mouthwashes, and make lifestyle changes to improve your oral health.
First, your mouth will be numbed to keep you comfortable during your appointment at Houska Dental.
Dr. Randy will use a variety of special dental tools to clean bacteria away from between your teeth and gums.
Each half of your mouth will be cleaned during a separate, 1-2 hour appointment. Your next appointment will usually be scheduled 1-2 weeks after your first appointment so that your mouth can heal and recover.
Gum disease is primarily treated with antibiotics, and by removing the bacteria-filled plaque and tartar that cause gum disease. However, surgery is sometimes required for more advanced cases.
Deep cleaning is done under local numbing and takes two appointments over a period of 1-2 weeks. Each treatment is done to clean half of your mouth. This treatment is also called “scaling & root planing.” Dr. Randy will use special tools to remove bacteria from between your teeth and gums. He will also smooth the roots of your teeth to eliminate “pockets” of gum disease-causing bacteria. Along with good at-home oral hygiene and antibiotics, this is often enough to reverse gingivitis or halt the progression of more advanced gum disease.
If you have a more advanced, irreversible case of gum disease, you will need to come and see Dr. Randy for periodontal maintenance every 3-4 months. This treatment is sort of a “mini deep cleaning.” It involves cleaning deeply between your teeth and gums, but is not quite as comprehensive as a deep cleaning, and takes only one appointment. Along with good at-home oral hygiene, this will stop the progression of gum disease and ensure your teeth and gums stay healthy for years to come.
